Dealing With Back Acne (PART 2): The DOs and DON'T

Dealing With Back Acne Acne is a very common skin problem faced by many people and it occurs when the pores in the skin become clogged by dead skin cells, oil and dirt. It does not only appears on your face, it can grow on your body as well.

Today, let's continue our talk on...
...
"BACK ACNE"

Before I share about the DOs and DON'T, let's continue from where we ended off..... Previously, I have shared about my friend's true (success) story on back acne. If you haven't read it, check it out by clicking the following picture:

P.S.: Some part of this post will be linking to the previous article, so be sure to read that before proceeding.

So... how do I help my friend to heal her back acne? Let me explain...

First, my friend told me the "history" of her skin care routine and skin condition before and during the breakouts period.

Here's a brief summary on the "history" of her skin....blah...blahh...blahhhh... :
She has very oily and acne prone facial skin, so all along she thought her body has the same skin type as her face. Hence, all the products she tried were designed for oily and acne prone skin; apparently none has worked out. Not to mention she used 100% tea tree oil, as a spot treatment after taking a shower, which also did not work out well. Alongside, she experienced rashes and itching that comes and goes each day.

Then, I analyzed her skin using the moisture analyzer device, commonly seen in my reviews, and found out that her skin type was not what she thought it would be. At that point, her skin wasn't very oily in fact, it was super dry!

From what she told me, I started piecing up all the factors together and came to my conclusion [...] — The cause of her acne was definitely due to clogged pores (dead skin cells, oil, dirt). But what made her breakouts progressively worse was because of using the wrong products and treating methods, which irritate and constantly drying up her skin. Also, the continual use of the wrong products caused her skin to become sensitive.

At that time, her skin condition was partially infested with inflamed pimples, super dry and gets irritated easily. As a result, it wasn't easy to find a product that suits her (then) skin. After some trial and error, we finally found a product that works.

The product is called "Natural Real Mild Body Wash" and it's from Happy Bath.

In case you haven't heard of the brand "Happy Bath", here's an introduction I copied from YesStyle (lol):
Happy Bath infuses all-natural ingredients into its range of body care products for a truly pleasurable and refreshing bathing experience. Established in 2000, the brand carries an assortment of bath essentials ranging from facial cleansers to hand creams. Happy Bath manufactures all its products in South Korea and belongs to the AMOREPACIFIC group of brands alongside Laniege, Innisfree, Etude House and others.

Happy Bath carries many different types of body washes that are made of natural ingredients, so they aren't too harsh to use on the skin. I chose the Mild one because I believe it is the most gentlest to use on my friend's (then) skin.

Besides body wash, she also needs a gentle spot treatment to tackle her existing pimples. As I have always had good experiences with Etude House products, I suggested to her to give Etude House's "OMG! Trouble Break Mist (Spray)" a try.

She did, and the two products really worked out positively for her.

Note: Our skins are different and react differently to product, so what worked for my friend might not work out for you.

Overall conclusion, you don't really need harsh chemicals and a lot of products to treat acne. As long as you treat your acne with the right products and methods that suit your skin type, you would most likely achieve positive results.

So how to find the right products for your skin? and how to treat your back acne?

Read on...

- Moving onto the topic of the day! -

"The DOs and DON'T"
 when dealing with body-back acne...

The DOs:

Find Out The Root Cause
Knowing the cause of your breakouts is the first step in knowing how to clear up back acne. So question yourself~! Following are some example questions to start with... :

1. When did the breakouts started?

2. Did you modify your skin care routine prior to your breakouts? (e.g. change or add-in new products). If yes, do you have any idea what product triggered the breakouts? If yes, stop using that product immediately.

3. Have you made any diet changes prior to your breakouts? (e.g. increasing intake of dairy products, consuming more oily, spicy and junk foods)

4. Have you made any lifestyle changes prior to your breakouts? (e.g. exercising, sun-tanning)

5. Do you have good hygiene practice? (e.g. shower, regular changing of clothes and bedsheet [if you sleep topless] )

Understanding Your Skin Type (acne-prone, dry, normal, oily, sensitive) & Finding the Right Body Care Product
A critically important step in treating acne in the right way is to determine your skin type. All body care products available in the market are designed for different skin types and concerns. Therefore, in order to find the right product to treat your skin, you have to know your skin first.

For your information, facial skin and body skin are different. Hence, although the causes of body acne are the same as facial acne, the treatment is different. So don't treat them the same!

TIPS: Look for products that aren't too harsh or too drying because treating acne doesn't need aggressive treatment, gently does it!

Apply Topical Treatment
Opt for a spot zapper that is strong enough to combat zits but is gentle to the skin. As the zits on the back area are hard-to-reach, I recommend using product that comes in a spray pump.

Recommendation: Product that contains Salicylic Acid such as Etude House OMG! Trouble Break Mist — a body-acne care product formulated with Salicylic Acid and other healing properties for breakouts. With built-in 360-degree pump, it sprays from any angle, even upside down to treat hard-to-reach areas like the back and shoulders.

Practice Good Hygiene
For example, taking showers daily, regular changing of clothes, bed sheets ...

Dirt, oil and sweat accumulate on your skin throughout the day can clog up the pores and cause acne. So taking a shower helps to keep your skin clean; free from bacteria and impurities, preventing acne occurrences and/or from worsening!

Clothes are made of fabric and it absorb sweat and oil. Hence, changing clothes daily is a must, especially after sweating. You wouldn't want to rub those dirts back onto your skin, right? And for the ladies, lingeries will also soak up sweat and oil, so make sure you change it and wear a clean piece.

Similar to the clothes, bed sheets are also made of fabric and will trap dirt, sweat and oil. If you have a habit to sleep topless, remember to change and wash your bed sheet weekly.

Wear Breathable Clothing To Keep Your Skin Dry
Unbreathable clothing holds moisture and stays damp, which can create a breeding ground for bacteria that may trigger and/or worsen existing acne. Thus, it is recommended to wear high-tech, breathable fabric that have wicking properties as it helps to admit air to the skin, allowing moisture and sweat to evaporate.

Keep Your (Long) Hair Away From Your Back
Hair traps oil, dirt and dust easily, which may trigger breakouts and/or make acne worse. So if you have long hair, try to keep it away from your back. Not to mention the hair care products, such as serums, styling gels and creams, that we often use on our hair may clog the pores and trigger breakouts as well. So make sure your hair doesn't touch your back acne.

The Don't:

Scratching or Popping The Zits!
Scratching or popping the zits may cause further injury to the skin, resulting in scarrings that tend to leave a hole appearance, like what my friend has now:

Therefore, if you want your acne to heal flawlessly, avoid picking at your pimples!

Exfoliating or Scrubbing
Exfoliation buffs away dead skin cells and unclogs the pores, which helps to reduce the growth of acne and recurrence. But if you have lots of red inflamed pimples, it's best to avoid exfoliating or scrubbing as this action may further aggravate the zits and cause them to get more inflamed. Only exfoliate when you don't have much inflamed pimples.

Wearing Tight Clothing
Wearing tight clothing rubs against skin, causing friction that may aggravate your acne and lead to excessive sweating. Thus, it's best to wear loose clothing.

Covering Up Acne With Makeup
The skin on your body is thicker and has larger pores than the skin on your face, making it more prone to getting clogged. Plus, the back area is hard to reach and visualize, you may not remove the makeup thoroughly during cleansing. So I don't recommend to apply makeup on your back at all!

That's all the DOs and DON'T I gave to my friend, which "played" a part in healing her back acne. Hopefully, what I have shared would be helpful for people who are facing the same problem. Acne sufferers, press on and keep fighting!

Dealing With Back Acne (PART 1): TRUE STORY

Are you struggling with back acne?

Feeling depressed?

Thinking of giving up on fighting acne?
...

Well, you gotta read on...

Dealing With Back Acne
I know dealing with back acne is not an easy task. It can be very frustrating because it is hard to reach and is also difficult to visualize the condition. Despite that, it is still possible to heal it. Trust me, back acne CAN get healed! Let me briefly share with you my friend's story...

My friend had been suffering from moderate back acne for over a year. Here are the BEFORE pictures on how her back acne looks:

Close-Up Shot: The zits even grew up to the back of her neck.

Close-Up Shot: And you can tell, they were all red and inflamed.

She had tried various methods to treat her back acne but to no success. Instead, it became worse. Being a lady who likes to wear semi-revealing outfits (but nothing promiscuous), she was dejected as she had to avoid wearing backless, low-back outfit, let alone bikini/swimsuit, because she was well aware that flaunting a pimple-ridden back in such outfit in public can be very embarrassing and hideous, and people may even start to talk about her. It really affected her self-esteem for sure.

So ten and a half months ago, she approached me for help in that state. To tell the truth, initially, I didn't want to help her because I am not a skin care expert. There is a possibility that I might make her acne worse instead of healing it. But she said that she will not put the blame on me if her acne got worse because it was her idea and she was the one who approached me. Since she said that, I agreed to help however, I made no promises on the results. I even told her to be prepared for negative results. From then on, she became my experiment subject. LOL.

It was quite difficult to find the ideal body care products for her skin because she has really sensitive body skin, but we did not give up. It took some trial and error finding the suitable products and at the end of the long journey, our patience was rewarded — the results turned out positively.

Healing in progress — zits drying-up... :

Healing in progress — getting better... :

Here are the AFTER pictures on how her back acne looks now:

Close-Up Shot: The back of her neck

Well, you can tell that there are still plenty of imperfections — scarrings resulted from popping and scratching the zits (her bad habit), which are out of my capability. [...] On the bright side, the overall appearance of her back has definitely improved.

In conclusion, it is POSSIBLE to clear up back acne as long as you treat it in the correct way. Therefore, if you have back acne, DO NOT GIVE UP FIGHTING!

Side information: My friend is very happy and willing to share her story, so she granted me the permission to share her story and pictures publicly on my blog. She hopes her experience and success story would be able to give you, whoever is in the same boat, a glimpse of hope and motivation to continue battling! So keep fighting!

From this "experiment", I have learned a few things on treating back acne and I will share them, for example tips on what to do and not to do etc., on my blog soon... Of course, I will also be sharing the products she used to treat her back acne. So be sure to stay tuned to my blog for PART 2. :)

(Update on 11th August 2015): If you would like to find out what products she used and the tips, check out PART 2 — "Dealing With Back Acne: The DOs and DON'T"!

5 Acne Spot Treatments Recommendations

Acne Spot Treatments Recommendations The most effective way to get rid of a pimple quick is to use a spot zapper. A spot zapper is a targeted pimple treatment that usually contains active acne ingredient such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or tea tree oil, to calm inflammation and heal pimple.

P.S: If you want to know more about the mentioned active acne ingredients, read my article on "Understanding The Acne Fighters".

Over the years, I have tried many different kinds of spot treatments and here are my FIVE PICKS that I find work the most effective in banishing pimples:

Number 1: Etude House AC Clinic Intense Liquid Spot
A spot zapper formulated with Salicylic Acid, which helps to calm inflammation and treat pimples. It also contains botanical extract (Hinoki Cypress) that reportedly inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. What's more, it is in clear, liquid form which absorbs into the skin quickly, making it perfect to use under makeup! This is part of my everyday skin care routine~!

Check out my full review: http://info-tipstriks.blogspot.com/2013/10/review-etude-house-ac-clinic-intense.html

Number 2: Etude House AC Clinic Intense Pink Powder Spot
Another part of my every day skin care routine~ This spot zapper has a similar formula as the Liquid Spot — Formulated with Salicylic Acid which helps to calm inflammation and treat pimples. It also contains botanical extract (Hinoki Cypress) that reportedly inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

The only difference is it has pink powder that contains sulfur — an antibiotic, and it will leave some pink powder residue on your skin after application. The pink powder helps to soothe and alleviate swelling skin to minimize damage. This is actually more powerful in treating pimples than the Liquid Spot but unfortunately, it is designed to use at night. Note: A cotton swab is required to extract the pink powder for application.

Check out my full review: http://info-tipstriks.blogspot.com/2013/11/review-etude-house-ac-clinic-pink.html

Number 3: Benzac AC Gel 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide
Formulated with active acne ingredient, Benzoyl Peroxide, that unblocks pores with a mild peeling effect and clears pimples within 48 hours. With it's unique Acrylates Copolymer (AC) Technology, it absorbs sebum and releases glycerin to help hydrate skin. Ideal to use on inflamed pimples!

Benzac AC Gel is also available in stronger concentration of 5% and 10%.

Check out my full review: http://info-tipstriks.blogspot.com/2015/07/review-benzac-ac-25-5-benzoyl-peroxide.html

Number 4: Thursday Plantation 100% Pure Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is a natural, powerful antibacterial ingredient that zaps a broad spectrum of bacteria. It penetrates into the skin and dries out all kinds of pimples quickly.

As this is in the concentration of 100%, it is super powerful in dealing with acne. If you find 100% Tea Tree Oil is too strong for your skin as a spot treatment, you can take 1 drop and dilute with water, in 1:9 ratio, to create your own acne spot treatment. If you want to increase the strength, you can just dilute it with less water. 100% Tea Tree Oil has many uses. You can even use it to DIY homemade face mask for acne. For other uses, please google~

On the drawback, it may be harsh; people with sensitive skin have to watch-out because this may cause an allergic reaction.

Number 5: Innisfree JejuBija Anti-Trouble Spot Essence R
This spot essence is enriched with torreya seed oil and green calamine ingredients which help to rapidly calm down breakouts. It is a skin care product but it has a green undertone which kind of helps to neutralize redness. So sometimes I use it on my pimples as a color corrector prior to makeup application.

*P.S: Innisfree has discontinued both the Essence W and Essence R. But recently, they released a new product with an improved formula called Bija Anti-Trouble Spot Essence (without W or R) and it doesn't have the green undertone.

As the latter recommendation (Number 5) is a *discontinued product, I will include one more product to compensate for the "loss"...

Number 6: 3M Nexcare Acne Patch .aka. Blemish Clear Cover
These patches act as a barrier over the acne to reduce hand contact and infection. Best part? It helps to absorb oil and all the pus embedded in the pimple, thereby reducing the damage done to your skin because you don't have to pop and squeeze it with your fingers! Ideal for inflamed, pus-filled pimples. With these patches, you will be able to bid your zits a speedier farewell.

Nexcare Acne Patch is available mostly in circular shape, which gives the same effect as the square shape, but I prefer the square ones as I find it covers the zit and adhere to the skin better.

So these are the FIVE (or six?) acne spot treatments I recommend to try. I hope you find it helpful.

Review: Benzac AC 2.5% & 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Gel

Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Gel is an acne spot treatment formulated with active acne ingredient, Benzoyl Peroxide, that unblocks pores with a mild peeling effect and clears pimples and blackheads without drying skin.

Benzac AC Gel in 2.5% Strength

With it's unique Acrylates Copolymer (AC) Technology, it absorbs sebum and releases glycerin to help hydrate skin. It is dermatologically-tested, safe and gentle and it claims to kill pimples' bacteria within 48 hours.

It is available in 3 strengths — 2.5%, 5% and 10%.

Usage: Apply to affected areas once or twice daily or as directed by dermatologist.

Benzac AC Gel comes in a squeezable tube, like a toothpaste tube, with a plastic twist-off cap. Each tube weighs 60g.

The gel has a watery-creamy texture.

The skin may feel sticky when the gel is applied, but once the gel gets absorbed into the skin, there is no sticky or greasy feel.

Tried & Tested
FYI, I am a user of Salicylic Acid, an active acne ingredient which is gentler than Benzoyl Peroxide. As Salicylic Acid is still working well on my acne (both inflamed and non-inflamed), I don't really want to switch to Benzoyl Peroxide. However, Salicylic Acid takes a week or two to treat my *cystic acne; I can't wait that long to get rid of these kind of pimples because they are generally painful to the touch and can be very annoying. (P.S: I have been getting a few cystic acne recently.) Therefore, I decided to use Benzoyl Peroxide on them.

*Cystic Acne: They are generally big, red, painful and pus-filled.

I got a mini sample tube of Benzac AC Gel in 5% strength:
I have tried it and it did heal my cystic pimples however, I think 5% strength is slightly strong for my sensitive skin as it caused the area where I applied the cream to turn red and itchy. So I decided to reduce the strength and try the 2.5% one. Although it is 2.5%, it is still as effective as 5%.

Within 12 hours of applying the gel on my cystic pimples, my pimples were much smaller and a lot less painful. Within 48 hours, they became flat! I swear the results were amazing on my pimples — fast and effective!

Here's the illustration of the healing process of one of my cystic pimples:
The only drawback is drying. In my opinion, the 2.5% strength is less drying than the 5% one. It may still dry out the skin and cause the skin to peel but well, being able to get rid of big, red and painful zit in 2 days, [...] it's all worth it lah! Anyway, the 2.5% strength did not irritate my sensitive skin hence, I think it is sensitive skin friendly.

If you are having trouble with cystic acne, I recommend to give this a try and let me know your thoughts after trying, yeah~? I'd love to know how it goes for you! :)

Benzac AC Gel is now available in National Skin Centre, selected FairPrice, Guardian, Unity and Watsons outlets at the price of SGD$17.50.

Review: Simple Spotless Skin Rapid Action Spot Zapper

Simple Spotless Skin Rapid Action Spot Zapper Simple® is well-known for their gentle, kind to skin products. FYI, they have over 50 years experience in caring for even the most sensitive skin. Their skin care products are formulated with only the purest possible ingredients and they have a variety of ranges that suit different skin types and skin problems.

So few months ago, I got their Spotless Skin Rapid Action Spot Zapper (15ml).

It is a pimple treatment that has a perfect blend of spot fighting ingredients and natural anti-bacterial goodness to visibly reduce spot redness and size without irritation to the skin. The following are a more in-depth details on the ingredients content of the Rapid Action Spot Zapper:

4 Spot Fighting Ingredients:
- ZINC PCA absorbs excess oils
- CHAMOMILE skin soothing anti-irritant
- WITCH HAZEL tones and tightens pores
- LAVENDER calms and soothes redness.

1 Natural Anti-Bacterial:
- PHYTOSPHINGOSINE helps to fight spots and blemishes.

0 Harsh Chemicals:
- NO ARTIFICIAL, UNNECESSARY CHEMICALS (= No artificial coloring or perfume...) so it won't upset your skin.

Full Ingredients List: Aqua, PEG-20 Glyceryl Laurate, Propylene Glycol, Carbomer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Hamamelis Virginiana Distillate, Zinc PCA, Panthenol, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Allantoin, Benzophenone-4, Dipropylene Glycol, Phytosphingosine, Pantolactone, Anthemis Nobilis Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Linalool, Citric Acid

and... it claims to zap spots in just 4 hours
The product comes in a squeezable tube with a plastic screw-off cap. It has a roll-on applicator which is easy to use and perfect for on-the-go application. Overall, the product packaging is pretty compact so it's easy to bring around.

Despite it's fragrance-free, it has a very mild scent but nothing artificial. By the way, it's Dermatologically Tested and Approved. Perfect for even sensitive skin~

Usage/Directions: Apply directly onto spots as soon as they appear. Repeat application until the spot has disappeared. For optimal results, use it with the rest of the Spotless Skin products.

Tried & Tested!
I have a love-hate relationship with the applicator. The applicator is attached with a roll-on metal ball and it works like a roll-on deodorant which I find it unhygienic. However, the applicator allows a targeted application and it gives a soothing and cooling sensation during application. Each time I roll it on my skin, it releases some transparent liquid which takes a while to get absorbed into my skin after application. It does not leave a very sticky layer hence, in my view, it can be used under makeup as long as you let it gets fully absorbed into your skin prior applying makeup.

As for the effectiveness, it claims to zap spots in just 4 hours but unfortunately, it did not work out as what it claimed to do. In fact, it took more time (counted in days) to heal some (not all) of my non-inflamed zits. Sadly, besides temporarily soothed my inflamed, pus-filled pimples, it did nothing neither did it aggravate them. Thus, in conclusion, I would say...this spot zapper is not effective for my pimples. In my opinion, I think my pimples are kind of like immune to it's "too gentle" formula as my pimples are always treated with Salicylic Acid. P.S.: My pimples need stronger ingredients to deal with...

In my view, it is really gentle and is a perfect spot treatment for sensitive skin user but I think it is more for people who are in their early stage of growing pimples (e.g. teens) and/or have yet to use Salicylic Acid or any other stronger anti-acne ingredients for a long term. I think it might work out better and might show significant results for such group of people.

Simple® Spotless Skin Rapid Action Spot Zapper is available in Cold Storage, Guardian, NTUC FairPrice, Watsons at the price of SGD$23.90.

[Acne Story/Tips] My Current Skincare Routine May 2014 + Answers to FAQ

Current Skincare Routine Out of all of the emails I get, the most frequently asked questions are "what's your current skincare routine?", "how do you deal with breakouts during 'that time of the month'?", "......products recommendation that can fight pimples and pimple scars" etc. blahhhhhhhhhhhh~ majority of the mails are regarding to the little monster, A.C.N.E!

So, here I am answering to the most frequently asked questions~

Before I start, let me clarify one point. — I'm not a skin or beauty professional etc. so...all the information provided are based on my own experiences and thoughts. Even though the products I use/mention helped treat my skin problems, I don't know if they would work the same for you because our skins are different so what worked for me might not work the same for you. With that said, please treat below information as a reference.

1) What's my my skin type?
Oily/Combination + Acne-prone + Sensitive skin

2) What's my current skincare routine?
Well, I am aware that I have not been updating my skincare routine page since November 2013. That basically means I am still sticking with the routine .aka. am still using the products as listed.

But to be honest, I actually modified and added in a few products into my skincare routine in early Feb this year. Sorry for the extreme late update. In the future, more detailed information about my skincare routine will be updated in this post section followed by FAQ, if any, instead of the skincare routine page. Do take note of it. :)

[My Current Skincare Routine] (dated: 2nd Feb 2014)
The range of products I use for day and night.

To make things clearer, I'm going to separate my skincare routines into TWO — One with makeup products, one without. Without further ado, I shall introduce my current skincare routine~

Day and Night Routine IF I'm staying at home the whole day:
(WITHOUT makeup products)
Product I use in the DAY:

- Hiruscar Post Acne Gel
- Etude House AC Clinic Daily Gel Lotion
- Mizon Snail Repair Eye Cream
- Etude House AC Clinic Intense Pink Powder Spot
- Etude House AC Clinic Intense Hinoki Water Mist

*I added both exfoliators into my skincare routine in early January this year. Sorry for the extreme late update... Anyway, I bought the Cure Natural Aqua Gel since last year but I had stopped using it for awhile due to laziness and literally forgot about it's existence. Till one day, I recalled it's existence, then I resumed using it.

I exfoliate my face once or twice a week, depends on my mood and my hardworking-ness~ ROFL. If I'm going to exfoliate my face twice a week, I will usually use the Baking Powder Crunch Pore Scrub for the first exfoliation session and on the second exfoliation session, I will use the Cure Natural Gel.

I use different exfoliators because I have pretty sensitive skin especially on the area of my cheeks, excluding the area of my nose. I personally find the Baking Powder Crunch Pore Scrub a little harsh to my skin when I use it twice a week. As an exception, the area of my nose is non-sensitive but very oily hence, I will usually use the Baking Powder Crunch Pore Scrub on my nose twice a week. As for the rest of my face, I will usually exfoliate ONCE using the Baking Powder Crunch Pore Scrub and ONCE using the Cure Natural Gel. I hope it's not too confusing.

3) How do I deal with breakouts during 'that time of the month'? (only for girls lol)
Being a girl, breakouts are unavoidable, especially during 'that time of the month' .aka. menstrual period. So ladies..., no matter how good you pampered your skin, during 'that time of the month', the zits will surely come out to play. It's something inevitable but you can find ways to reduce the breakouts that will happen during 'that time of the month'.

Let me share with you some tips~:

First and foremost, refrain from touching or popping the zits! Leave them alone and eventually, they will "ripe" and heal themselves. I saw this interesting picture on twitter the other day and I find it kinda true so let me share with you, readers.
The moral of the story = Refrain touching or popping your pimple/zit!

Secondly, determine when you are most prone to breakout and lastly, deal with it.

To deal with my breakouts during 'that time of the month', I would first find out when my skin is most prone to breakout. I usually breakout during my first week and the week after of my period. Hence, what I usually do is to use Etude House AC Clinic Intense Mask Sheet a week before my period and when it's going into the week after my period .aka. post safe period. It did help me to reduce the amount and the severity of zits coming out to play. By the way, this mask is one of my 'secret weapons' to deal with breakouts.

Etude House AC Clinic Intense Mask Sheet contains Salicylic Acid, which is an anti-acne ingredient, that helps to prevent pimples and at the same time, tackle and treat the existing ones. Check out my review here: http://bitsdiaries.blogspot.com/2013/02/review-etude-house-ac-clinic-intense.html

There are many brands carrying anti-acne mask sheet. So of course, you can use other anti-acne mask sheet from other brands as long as it is specifically for troubled skin, I believe it would work out fine tackling zits as well. Do not neglect to hydrate your skin by the way!

As for guys, apparently you guys don't have the golden shitty time of the month so I don't know if you have a breakout cycle but nevermind, you can also try to determine when your skin are most prone to breakout. From there, you can decide on when to use the anti-acne treatment products, such as the Etude House AC Clinic Intense Mask Sheet, to tackle the zits.

FYI, Etude House AC Clinic Intense Mask Sheet is not the only mask sheet I use. I use facial masks twice a week and I have many mask sheets that serve different purposes — whitening, hydrating, soothing, pore tightening, oil-control and many more. Let me know if you are interested and wanted to know more about the mask sheets I use. I might consider doing a post sharing more details about them~

One thing to take note which I have said this a zillion times... As our skins are different, what worked for me might not work the same for you. Therefore, even though Etude House AC Clinic Intense Mask Sheet worked out awesomely for me, it might not work out as good for you. Hence, I strongly recommend to go ahead and try out different mask sheets that are designated for troubled skin and see which one works better for you then, you can consider adding that into your skincare routine.

On the other hand, in my opinion, what we eat or drink play a part in breakouts. With that said, try to stay away from (or eat less) greasy, spicy foods, seafood particularly "shellfish", junk foods, dairy products, soda/sweet drinks etc. Instead, consume more veggies in your diet and drink plain water or non-additives pure green tea. You can also take in health products such as vitamin pills etc. but for me, I don't do that. The only health product I consume is Chlorophyll drink. Google for more info.

Also, by having a good life routine does help and improve the skin conditions thus, don't be an owl and stay up late at night. Sleep early instead!

4) Products recommendation that can fight pimples and pimple scars
When people asked me for products recommendation, usually I will not state a specific product and ask you to go get this or must get this this this etc. because as stated before, "our skins are different, what worked for me might not work the same for you". I usually only share my experience on the products I used that worked for me. Hence, I always reply like "you might want to give this a try..." etc.. Whether you want to give the product I mentioned a shot, it's all up to you.

So for products recommendation, just check my skincare routine and you will know what products I'm going to share.

Here's an advice... If you are having pimples, just choose skincare products that contain anti-acne ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or tea tree oil etc. However, be warned that some signs of dryness are inevitable as anti-acne ingredients usually might cause skin to feel dry. If that's a problem to you, just add in an oil-free and non-comedogenic hydrating moisturizer into your skincare routine. In any case, I will advise all, especially for people with sensitive skin, to do a small patch test prior using the product or if there is any tester available on the shelves, test it prior purchasing the product.

Another note for people with sensitive skin... Be cautious to product that contains tea tree oil as it might cause an allergic reaction. Take note of the concentration — 100% is extremely strong... I personally have tried using 100% pure tea tree oil on zits and I suffered from bad allergic/irritation after application. Then I lowered down the concentration to 5% and it did not work out for me as well. It left me with bad allergic reactions/irritation(red, burnt, peeled, extremely itchy patches) again. From then, I stayed away from touching any products that contain tea tree oil. So do take note of the allergic reactions/irritation that might caused by Tea Tree oil.

As for post acne marks/scars, you can try getting whitening/spot treatment that is specifically for pimple scars. There are many various whitening/spot treatment products from different brands in the market.

Throughout my acne journey, I tried a few kinds of whitening/spot treatments and my personally favorite is Hiruscar Post Acne Gel, which is still a part of my skincare routine. It's a light gel and it did lighten my post acne marks. It gets absorbed into the skin without leaving a layer thus, it can be used under makeup without interference. 5) During the time when I suffered from horrible breakouts, do I wear makeup?
OF COURSE, I DO! But I tried to use products that state "non-comedogenic", which means "less clogging pores" and I tried to wear as minimal makeup as possible because thick makeup can cause acne condition to become worse. Back then, I worn 1 or 2 layers of The Face Shop FACE it Power Perfection BB Cream, covered my blemishes with DHC Medicated Acne Concealer and finished with Maybelline Pure Pact Mineral Healthy Perfecting UV Compact Foundation. Is it too much?  Anyway, nowadays I only wear BB cream alone.

6) What sunscreen do I wear?
I don't wear sunscreen and I have zero knowledge on sunscreen so, sorry I can't help on any questions regarding to sunscreen.

I hope this would help...... There are still many questions that I wanted to post it here but I think I shall stop for now. Otherwise, this post will become super lengthy. I will write up another FAQ post in the future so keep your questions coming!

Ashley
